Resume – a brief idea
The resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. If it stands
out from the clutter and wins and interview, it works. A resume is a self advertisement
and must present you in the best light. It convinces the employer that you have
what it takes to be successful in this new position or career. It stimulates interest
in meeting you and learning more about you. It inspires the prospective employer
to pick up the phone and ask you to come in for an interview.
Tips To Make Your Resume Stand Out:
The chances are that your resume will be one of 10's or even 100's that your prospective
employer will receive. What can you do to make your resume stand out?
-
Use precise and powerful words
Hone your words so that they are as precise and powerful as they can be.
-
Be specific
For instance, if you increased productivity, state how much it improved. If you
are not allowed to be specific without giving away industrial secrets, you can write
"by over 33%" or similar.
-
Is there enough white space?
A densely packed resume may be getting in all the facts but it is difficult to read.
Don’t try to pack too much into too little space.
-
Use bullet points
If you've got a list of things, bullet them. It makes them easier to read.
-
Be easily contactable
Give your prospective employer as many different ways as possible to contact you-
Phone, cell phone, email, post, fax.
-
Put a Summary section at the top of your resume
A summary section near the start of your resume gives your prospective employer
a flavor of what you're about and if you write it well, you'll increase the chance
of the rest of the resume being read.
